Sure-handed Soberano strikes twice, Martlets streak at 73

Published: 17 January 2010

OTTAWA - Senior Amy Soberano, a defensive-minded forward from Toronto, scored her first two goals of the season, including the game winner, as No.1-ranked McGill extended their win streak to 73 games with a 4-2 road victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Sunday.

It was Ottawa's 25th straight loss to McGill, which owns a 39-2-1 overall record in their last 42 meetings against the Gee-Gees.

Veteran Rebecca Martindale of Kingston, Ont., added a goal and an assist for the Martlets, who led 1-0 after one period and 2-1 after two.

Soberano opened the scoring at 5:20 of the first period and later tallied a power-play marker to give McGill a 3-1 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the game. The Gee-Gees made it 3-2 when Erika Pouliot of St. Joseph de Beauce, Que., netted her second of the game at 18:39.

McGill captain Vanessa Davidson, the Kirkland, Que., native who leads the league in scoring with 10-15-25 in 13 games, iced the contest only 12 seconds remaining, getting an empty-netter on the power-play.

Penalties were a huge factor as McGill went 3-for-8 with the extra attacker, while Ottawa was 1-for-3. The Martlets have the second-best power-play in the nation and are operating with a 30.3 per cent success rate (20-for-66).

McGill outshot the Gee-Gees 46-19 as freshman goaltender Taylor Salisbury from Surrey, B.C., improved to 7-0. Ottawa's Stephanie Auger, a rookie from Belleville, Ont., posted 42 saves in a losing cause, as her record fell to 3-4.

The division-leading Martlets improved to 13-0 on the season and will host the second-place Montreal Carabins (10-2-1) on Jan. 22. Ottawa, which sits in third at 4-8-1, plays their next game at Concordia (1-8-3) on Jan. 23.

MARTLET MURMURS: McGill has outscored opponents 54-13 in 13 regular-season contests... They have scored 48.2 per cent of their offensive output on special teams, with 20 PP goals and four shorthanded markers... Veteran Cathy Chartrand continues to lead the nation's blueliners in goals and points with an 8-10-18 record in only 13 contests... Her closest rivals are UBC's Tamara Pickford (16GP: 6-9-15) and York's Kelsey Webster (19 GP: 4-11-15).
