Soccer Stingers stung by undefeated Martlets

Published: 19 September 2010

MONTREAL - Forward Alexandra Morin-Boucher of St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., scored the game-winner in the 29th minute of play as McGill blanked Concordia 3-0 in women's soccer team at Concordia Stadium, Sunday.

The Martlets improved their win streak to 4-0 in regular season play and gave McGill sole possession of first-place in the eight-team Quebec conference, three points ahead of Laval, Sherbrooke and Montreal, each of who are tied for second place with identical 3-1 records.

Morin-Boucher, a physical education junior, converted a pass from Ottawa native Laura Bland-Lasso to tally her league-leading sixth goal of the season. Defender Julia Bahen, a sophomore from Vancouver, B.C., added an insurance marker when she was awarded a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.  Freshman Kelsey Wilson of Pincourt, Que., scored her first official goal in a McGill uniform to put the game out of reach four minutes later.

McGill had a lopsided 22-3 advantage in shots toward net and a 13-0 edge in corner kicks and a 16-1 margin in crosses.

Rookie 'keeper Victoria Muccilli was called upon to make only two saves to register her second shutout in as many starts, improving her record to 2-0.

"We played a real solid game," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "We executed well and although we should have scored more, I'm happy with the results and our overall approach to the game. It was nice to get everyone some playing time, especially (Hannah) Simmons and Wilson who saw their first action of the season and their play was a factor in how well the team performed on the pitch."

Next weekend, the Martlets will host the winless UQTR Patriotes (0-4) at Molson Stadium on Sept. 24 before taking on their arch-rival Montreal Carabins in a highly anticipated match-up at Stade CEPSUM on Sept. 26
