Simmons sizzles, stakes Martlets to success over Citadins

Published: 20 September 2009

MONTREAL - Midfielder Hannah Simmons of West Vancouver, B.C., came off the bench to score the game-winner as visiting McGill blanked the Université du Quebec a Montreal Citadins 1-0 in women's university soccer at Parc Jeanne Mance, Sunday.

On the men's side, McGill (2-1-1) and UQAM (1-0-2) battled to a 1-1 draw.

Simmons, an environmental science sophomore who subbed in at halftime, converted a pass from freshman Sophia Horricks in the 52nd minute of play to give the fourth-place Martlets (2-2) their second straight road win after starting out the season at 0-2.

Horricks, who also hails from Vancouver, was named as McGill's player of the game by the Carabins coaching staff.

McGill had a large territorial advantage, directing 25 shots towards the UQAM net, compared to the seventh-place Citadins (0-3-1), who had only two shots. The official tally on net was 14-2 in McGill's favour and rookie goalkeeper Vicky Duplessis was picked as UQAM's player of the game in the wake of a stellar 13-save performance.

McGill 'keeper Anne-Catherine Huot, a 5-foot-8 management junior from Quebec City who has been hobbled with minor injuries since training camp, earned her first start of the season and registered two saves for the shutout.

"Winning 1-0 is perhaps not as gratifying as it should be when you have more than 20 shots in a game," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "Nonetheless, our goal this weekend was to get two wins on the road and move up in the standings and we accomplished that. We played with more intensity in the last 45 minutes and got an important goal from Simmons."

The Martlets will now return to the friendly confines of Molson Stadium for the next two games. They will host sixth-place Bishop's (1-2-1) on Sept. 25 and fifth-place UQTR (2-2) on Sept. 27.
