Running the Point: Lessons from the Point Guard Position & the NCAA Tourney

As you watch the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament get in full swing this Thrsday there are many things to look out for: buzzer beating finishes, upsets, the ups and downs of following your favorite team as well as one team winning and one team's season ending in a loss. However one other thing to watch for, which can be the key to whether a team advances or goes home, is the play and leadership of the point guard position.

The point guard is the most valuable position on the basketball court, similar to the quarterback in football or the pitcher in baseball. Point guards set the tone for the game: they act as the coach on the floor, calling the plays that the team will execute on both offense and defense; they control the speed of the game by how they bring the ball up the court; and they set up their teammates for success by passing the ball to them in good positions and calling the plays that get them to those positions.
