Redmen stung by buzzer-beater at Concordia

MONTREAL - Kyle Desmarais scored only five points but hit a jump-shot at the buzzer as No.10-ranked Concordia rallied to edge visiting McGill 62-61 in men's university basketball before a capacity crowd, Saturday.
It was a classic cross-town confrontation that featured an incredible 19 lead changes, 10 of them in favour of the Stingers, who lead the RSEQ basketball league with a 10-2 record.
Concordia, which has won three of four meetings with McGill, had taken a 60-55 lead with 1:59 remaining in the contest but the second-place Redmen, roared back to grab a 61-60 lead with just three seconds remaining on a jumper by Aleksander Mitrovic, who led McGill with 12 points and collected five rebounds.
Karim Sy-Morissette added 11 points, five steals and a rebound for the second-place Redmen, who dropped to 8-6 and sit two points ahead of UQAM (7-7).
Teammate Winn Clark added nine points, while Vincent Dufort and Nic Langley scored eight apiece.
McGill led 12-10 after the opening stanza but the Stingers bounced back to take a 29-26 advantage at the half and maintained a 43-39 lead after three quarters.
Decee Krah scored a game-high 15 points for Concordia, which shot an inefficient 34.7 from the field, 25.9 from three-point range and 50.0 per cent from the foul-line. The Redmen shot 41.8, 43.8 and 47.1, respectively.
With two games remaining before playoffs, McGill's magic number to clinch second-place ahead of UQAM (7-7) is three points. The Redmen will honour their graduating seniors when they host Bishop's on Thursday (Feb. 23, 8 pm) before closing out the campaign at UQAM on Feb. 25.
