Redmen rebound, kick Carabins in revenge of the titans

MONTREAL - Sebastien Munro, a sophomore striker from Vancouver, B.C., came off the bench to score the game-winner in the 50th minute as fourth-ranked McGill tripled the No.8-Montreal Carabins 3-1 in men's university soccer, Sunday.

The win improved McGill to 3-1 in the Quebec conference and moved them into a tie atop the standings with Montreal, also 3-1. The result also marked the first career setback at Molson Stadium for Carabins head coach Pat Raimondo, who previously coached the Redmen. Raimondo, one of four Carabins to receive a red card over the final eight minutes of play, had posted a 5-0-5 record against his former team since switching allegiances 10 years ago.

Aside from the four Carabins ejections, the game featured five yellow cards, only one of which was assessed to McGill.

"It was a tough game because there was tension throughout," said McGill head coach David Simon, referring to the flurry of cards that were handed out by the officials. "We prevailed because of our discipline and I'm very proud of that because it is a sign of maturity. It was a total team effort. After Friday's loss (1-0 to Sherbrooke), it was important to bounce back."

Alex Pradie, a first-year defender from France, scored on a penalty kick in the final minute of the opening half to give the Redmen a 1-0 lead. Sixteen minutes after Munro put McGill ahead 2-0, the Carabins narrowed the gap on a goal by Vincent DeBruille.

However, Alex Dovi, a fifth-year senior from the Congo, put the game out of reach in the final minute of play.

McGill held a 17-11 territorial edge in shots toward the net but conceded a slight 5-4 advantage to Montreal in cormer kicks.

Goalkeeper Matt Gilmour, a junior from Vancouver, registered three saves to pick up the win, while Nizar Houhou posted an impressive nine saves in a losing cause for the Carabins.

"Hats off to our keeper," noted Simon. "He was under tremendous pressure (after losing to Sherbrooke) and he kept us in the game."

The Redmen now own a share of first-place with Montreal. Both teams have an identical 4-1 record. McGill plays at last-place UQTR (0-3-2) on Sept. 30 before hosting fifth-place UQAM (1-3-1) on Oct. 2. This was the second of four consecutive road games for the Carabins, who are slated to play at third-place Laval (3-1-1) next weekend.
