VICTORIA, BC - The McGill University men's golf team began their preparations in for the Canadian collegiate championships scheduled for the Cordova Bay Golf Club, May 29 to June 1.

McGill, which earned its berth based on its regular season results in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec golf circuit last fall, is one of four Quebec universities that have qualified for this annual event. The other schools are Laval, Montreal, and UQTR. The field is made up of 16 universities and 5 junior college teams that have qualified on a regional basis.

McGill's team is comprised of Ottawa native Brian Neill, Ryan Boyd of Montreal West, Benoit Miquel of Houston, Texas, Tom Calvet, from Nice, in France, and Sean McKinney of Vancouver, B.C.

The tournament is a 72-hole event, featuring five golfers per team, played over four days.

First round play begins Tuesday with McGill paired with players from Ottawa, Lethbridge and UQTR. Rounds 3 and 4 are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, with the top 10 men's teams playing a final round on Friday.

The Redmen warmed up for the Nationals by participating in the University of Victoria's Vikes Varsity-AM tournament on Sunday with Neill and his foursome winning the event.

This marks the fourth time in six years that McGill has played at the Nationals. Their last participation was in 2009 when the event was also played in Victoria.

The championship is organized by Golf Canada and one of the seven major annual events managed by golf's national governing body in Canada. The tournament is sanctioned by the CIS as a national university championship.
