Quebec election 2014: FAQs on voting

Who is eligible to vote?

  • To vote, you must be entered on the list of electors and satisfy the following conditions:
    • be 18 or older;
    • be a Canadian citizen; 
    • be domiciled in Quebec for six months.

How do I vote?

  • To vote, you have to establish your identity by presenting one of the following documents:
    • your health insurance card;
    • your driver’s license;
    • your Canadian passport;
    • your certificate of Indian status
  • Voting will vary according to whether your polling station is located in your home electoral division (riding) or in another electoral division. In both cases, you vote for a candidate from your home electoral division.

Can I vote on campus?

  • If you are a McGill student, you may register and vote on campus before the election for a candidate from your home electoral division. 
  • Where: Memorial Hall, McGill Sports Complex, 475 Pine Avenue West
  • When: March 28, April 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and April 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Students should enter via the main Athletics Complex entrance.
  • For students at the Macdonald Campus, please note that a polling station is also available at the Anne-Marie Edwards Science and Health Technologies Building, John Abbott College, First floor (same days and hours as above). 
  • Please bring the necessary identity documents that allow you to vote (see above) as well as your McGill ID.

Do I need to be registered as an elector?

What if I am not registered as an elector?

  • You must file an application for entry or correction on the list of electors.
  • You may do so at the polling station on campus. 
  • Where: Memorial Hall, McGill Sports Complex, 475 Pine Avenue West
  • When: March 28, April 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and April 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • To register or correct existing information, you must present two identification documents. One document must mention your name and your date of birth. The other document must indicate your name and your address.

Will classes be held on election day?

  • All classes, laboratories and examinations in all faculties and in the School of Continuing Studies are cancelled on Monday, April 7, 2014. 
  • This action is taken in accordance with the Quebec Election Act.
  • As a result of constraints with the Calendar of Academic Dates for Winter 2014, no make-up day can be scheduled. 
  • However, instructors may choose to be available for optional review sessions during their normal class time on April 7.

Will University administrative offices will be open for business on election day?

  • University administrative offices will be open for business as usual on Monday, April 7, 2014. 
  • All employees eligible to vote must be given four (4) consecutive hours for voting, not counting the time normally allowed for meals. 
  • In most cases, this requirement can be met by allowing staff to leave at 4:00 p.m., in accordance with the Quebec Election Act.
