Plante's performance paces Martlets past UNB

SHERBROOKE - Freshman Genevieve Plante registered a game-high 15 kills, to go along with 10 digs, four aces and two assisted stuff blocks as McGill defeated UNB 3-1 in women's volleyball at the second Quebec-Atlantic interlocking tourney of the season, Sunday. The set scores were 25-13, 25-12, 17-25 and 25-17.
The victory capped a successful weekend for the Martlets, who took three of four matches against AUS opponents, which bettered their 2-2 record in the first interlocking tourney three weeks ago at Quebec City.
McGill got off to an ominous start on Friday, losing 3-0 to Saint Mary's but they bounced back to down Memorial 3-1, Moncton 3-0 and UNB.
"We were a little sluggish against the Huskies," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "But as we relaxed, we got better over the weekend. We have to have confidence in our skill and ability and we will do fine."
Plante, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter from Montreal, had the best weekend of her young university career. The first-year kinesiology major was credited with 42 kills in 14 sets, to go along with 39 digs, five aces and an equal number of blocks.
Other leading performers for the Martlets included senior Kelsey Irwin of Vancouver, B.C., and sophomore Emily Kyte of Ottawa.
Irwin, a six-foot middle-blocker, tallied a team-high 43 kills, 44 digs and 20 blocks. The fifth-year arts major also contributed eight aces.
Kyte, a five-foot-11 power-hitter, was credited with 39 kills, 23 digs, one ace and seven blocks.
McGill sits third in the Quebec league with an 8-4 record, two wins shy of first-place Laval and Montreal, who own identical 10-2 records. The Martlets will play at Laval on Nov. 26 before hosting the Carabins, Nov. 28.
