Panthers pounce in shootout, snap McGill's 22-game win streak at home

Published: 23 September 2011

MONTREAL - Matt Carter scored the only goal of a post-overtime shootout as UPEI pounced on a rare McGill home-ice loss and came away with a 5-4 decision in men's preseason hockey opener, Friday.

It snapped a 22-game win streak at McConnell Arena for the Redmen, who hadn't lost since a 5-2 OUA East semifinal setback to Carleton on Feb. 24, 2010.

McGill had opened the scoring at 6:36 of the first period on freshman Guillaume Langelier-Parent's first marker of his university career. The Panthers roared back to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission on goals by Matthew Maione and Dana Fraser.

McGill rallied to go ahead 3-2 on markers from Jean-Francois Boisvert and Maxime Langelier-Parent at 11:09 and 18:51 of the second stanza but UPEI's Jared Gomes tallied with 29 seconds remaining in the period to knot the score at 3-3.

The Redmen took the lead for the third time when rookie Justin Ducharme potted his first career marker at 13:04 of the final frame but UPEI rallied again as Brandon Biggers netted the equalizer with just 1:53 remaining in regulation.
