Oops they did it again: Plante and Rohrbach named McGill - Ye Olde Orchard athletes of the week

Published: 3 October 2011

MONTREAL - Geneviève Plante of Montreal and Alex Rohrbach of Princeton Junction, N.J., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 2, 2011.

It marks the first time in school history that the same two athletes have been named in consecutive weeks.

Plante, a 20-year-old science sophomore majoring in kinesiology, was named tournament MVP while leading the volleyball Martlets to five consecutive victories en route to capturing the Ottawa Invitational over the weekend. The 5-foot-9 power-hitter racked up 66 kills, to go along with 78 digs, including a single-game school record 27 digs in the gold medal game, a 3-2 victory over Sherbrooke.  She also registered four aces, a pair of stuff blocks, a 2.22 passing ratio out of 3.0, a 39 per cent kill rating and a 25 per cent kill efficiency. Plante received a $6,000 Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary last year after starring at College Lionel Groulx.

Rohrbach, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound attacker with the men's lacrosse team, exploded for five goals and one assist as McGill rallied from a 3-1 deficit and trounced the Toronto Varsity Blues 15-6 on Saturday. The 18-year-old management freshman moved into sole possession of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association scoring race with 19 goals and 25 points in six games. Rohrbach joined the Redmen last month out of West Windsor Plainsboro high school in New Jersey, where he earned all-American honours and also played for the elite state team.
