OBIT: Memorial service for Chippindale set for May 7

MONTREAL -- A memorial service will be held for Warren Chippindale, a former McGill University hockey player, Saturday (May 7) at 1:30 p.m. in the Jeanne Timmins Amphitheatre of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, 3801 University Street.
Chippindale, who died on Nov. 27, 2010 at the age of 82, was a business leader who was known for great generosity.
Appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 1997, he was a driving force behind fund-raising campaigns for many institutions including McGill and the Montreal Neurological Institute.
"Warren was a long-time Redmen hockey supporter and donor," said Mike Nelson, president of the Friends of McGill Hockey alumni support group. "He will be missed by all who knew him."
Chippindale was a forward with the McGill Redmen from 1947 to 1949 after playing junior hockey with the Verdun Maple Leafs and MAAA Winged Wheelers. He also served as coach of the junior varsity squad.
He received a number of other honours, including The Award of Merit (Gold Medal) from The McGill Graduates Society in 1988, an Honorary Degree (LLD) from McGill in 1995, and a lifetime achievement award from the Montreal Neurological Institute in 2004.
Chippindale received numerous appointments for contributions to the accounting profession and represented his Canadian colleagues on the Council of the International Federation of Accountants. He also served as senior advisor to Auditors General of Canada and, at the request of the Minister of State for Finance, to the Office of the Inspector General of Banks.
Born March 22, 1928 in Denver, Colorado, Chippindale moved to Montreal in 1933 at the age of five, where he became a naturalized Canadian under his father's British citizenship. As a young man he was an avid student-athlete and attended Iona Avenue School, Roslyn Elementary School and Westmount High School. Entering McGill University in 1945, he joined the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
Chippindale graduated from McGill with a commerce degree, earning honours in economics and went on to become a chartered accountant. In 1949, he joined McDonald Currie & Co (which later became Coopers & Lybrand). He became Chairman and Chief Executive Partner in 1971 - serving in that capacity, as well as International Chairman, until his retirement in 1986.
From 1986 to 2000 he served as a director of a number of leading public companies including Alcan, Bell Canada, BCE, BCE Mobile, BCE Development, The Molson Companies, Canadian Investment Fund, The Laurentian Group, The Harris Bank, and Spectrum Financial Services.
From 2000 to 2007, he was the advisor to the chairman, president and CEO of the Salk Institute for Biological Research.
