OBIT: Former McGill football player Jeff Gayton was 32

MONTREAL - A funeral service for former McGill football player Jeff Gayton will be held Thursday in Ajax, Ont.

 

Gayton, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound offensive lineman who graduated in 2001, suffered a fatal heart attack on Sunday in Bowmanville, Ont. He was 32.

 

Born Jan. 25, 1978 in Barrie, Ont., he was recruited to McGill in 1996 out of Pine Ridge secondary school. Among his teammates at McGill were J.P. Darche and Randy Chevrier, both of whom went on to play in the National Football League. Gayton spent three seasons with the Redmen before earning a degree in physical education.

 

The son of Bob and Doreen Gayton, he is survived by wife Emma and four-month old son Jacob.

 

Visitation will be held Wednesday at the McEachnie Funeral Home, 28 Old Kingston Rd., in Ajax from 7-9 p.m. A service is scheduled to be held at Forest Brook Community Church, 60 Kearney Drive, in Ajax, on Thursday at 11:30 am. The family has indicated that donations may be made in his name to FOOTPRINTS (footprints4autism.org), which provides services for families with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
