The Neuro holds annual Reitman Holiday Luncheon

Published: 9 December 2016

Each December for over 60 years, the Reitman family has invited all members of The Neuro to a splendid luncheon that has become an enjoyable annual tradition. This gathering shows a wonderful holiday spirit of generosity and thankfulness.

Reitman family members, Joel (President of Jillcy Investments Ltd.), Jill and Dorothy were present for the 69th Reitman Holiday Luncheon on December 9th to greet staff and to help staff volunteers serve a tasty meal to some 1,200 members of The Neuro.

The Reitman family began this pleasant event in 1947, the year in which Ruth Reitman underwent an operation conducted by neurosurgeon Dr. William Cone. As an expression of gratitude and admiration, Mrs. Reitman held a holiday party that same year for Dr. Cone and his assisting staff of residents and nurses. That heartwarming occasion for a few grew into the Reitman luncheon, which today requires three shifts of volunteers serving meals to many hundreds.

“We are so proud to have celebrated the Montreal Neuro for so many years and we salute the people who make this institution the place it is,” says Joel Reitman.
“On behalf of our family, we wish everyone a Happy Holiday. Certainly the Reitman holiday party is indeed a tradition.”

As in past years, Reitman family members will briefly address the staff and The Neuro’s Cosgrove Choir led by Dr. Ken Hastings will perform “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “Feliz Navidad” and other traditional Christmas songs in English and French, as well as songs celebrating Chanukah. Later this month, the choir will bring its musical cheer to patients during its annual evening round of the Montreal Neurological Hospital.

Staff were invited to donate non-perishable food that were delivered to the NDG Food Depot for distribution to people in need. Last year, The Neuro family filled a dozen large boxes with food.
