MONTREAL - Mélodie Daoust of the McGill women's hockey team, has been named female athlete of the week by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, for the period ending Jan. 29, 2012.

It marks the ninth time that a McGill nomination has won the RSEQ weekly award this season.

Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a middle distance runner with the Laval Rouge et Or, won the nomination on the men's side.

Daoust, a 5-foot-6 centre from Valleyfield, Que., scored eight points, including two goals in a pair of McGill victories last week. The 20-year-old physical education freshmen assisted on five goals in a 10-0 win at Carleton last Saturday as McGill avenged a loss to the Ravens from the previous week. A former member of the Canadian national under-20 program, she attended Collège Edouard-Montpetit before enrolling at McGill last semester.

Previous RSEQ honorees from McGill this season include swimmer Steven Bielby (three times: Jan. 24, Oct. 25 and Nov. 15), hockey players Ann-Sophie Bettez (Jan. 17), Marc-Andre Dorion (Jan. 10) and Leslie Oles (Nov. 22), plus Gideon Balloch (rugby, Nov. 8) and Brianna Miller (rugby, Sept. 12).
