McGill women's soccer coach announces 2010 recruiting class
MONTREAL - Marc Mounicot, head coach of the McGill University women soccer team, has announced his recruiting class in preparation for training camp, which is slated to begin on August 15 at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
Among the new faces competing for a spot on the 25-member roster are three freshmen goalkeepers, including Victoria Muccilli of Mississauga, Ont., Valerie Labbé of Mascouche, Que., and Devon Denis from Bainbridge Island, Oregon.
Muccilli, a kinesiology major, joins the Martlets out of the Hamilton Avalanche of the W-League. She previously played with the Mississauga Falcons of the Ontario Youth Soccer League. Labbé, who is enrolled in education, is a product of the Quebec Sport Etude and provincial programs. Most recently, she played for the Laval Cometes of the W-League. Denis, an environmental science freshman, has played with various US select teams.
McGill's strong defensive corps will have five additions vying for a spot, including Kelsey Wilson of Pincourt, Kendra Bui of Vancouver, B.C., Cristina Burrows of Calgary, Jenna Holdham of Ottawa and Kiki Zaist from Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Wilson, from the Lac St Louis region of Montreal, is also a product of the provincial and Sport Etude program but has also be a member of the national training Centre in Montreal and has experience at the W-League level with Laval. "Wilson will add another component to our team because of her quality on set plays and physical presence," says Mounicot.
Bui played in the Pacific Coast Soccer League and has done her training with the TSS Academy in Richmond, B.C. "Bui is smart centre-back with a good understanding of the game and strong sense of anticipation," says Mounicot.
Burrows, an agricultural science major, has transferred from Jackson State in Mississippi. A left-side fullback, she played at the major level in Calgary.
A key addition a midfielder is Hannah Rivkin of St John's, Nfld. She brings international experience with the Canadian under-20 squad and is part of the program at the Maritimes national training centre. Last season, she played at the Canada Games and the U-18 Canadian club national championships.
"She will bring a lot of energy to our midfield and has a strong chance to be starter on our team," says Mounicot. "Her volume of play is amazing. She uses both feet equally well and is often lethal in the final 30 minutes of her games, using here strong running, passing and shooting skills."
Other freshmen midfielders include Meghan Bourque of Burlington, Ont., Hannah Kirby of Kanata, Ont., and Maddy Erola-Channen of Ottawa. All are products of the OYSL and provide depth to the roster.
Freshmen forwards include Bianca Cordileone of Laval, Que., and Stephanie Avery of Delta, B.C.
Cordileone, who has had some stints with the Quebec provincial program, brings speed and movement after playing with the Laval Conquerants of the Quebec Elite Soccer League. Avery, who hails from TSS Academy and the Pacific Coast Soccer League, brings experience, scoring ability and can be used as a strong lone striker.
The Martlets will open their exhibition season on Aug. 21-22, when they play host to Guelph and York, respectively, at Molson Stadium.
