McGill volunteers sought to host Japanese students

Published: 28 July 2004

Dear Colleague,

Later this summer, McGill Summer Studies will welcome more than 100 Japanese university students for our Summer Intensive English Program. Over the 12 years that the program has been offered at McGill, one of the highlights of the Summer Intensive English Program for the visiting students has been the opportunity to experience a weekend homestay visit with a local family. By virtue of the increased participation this year, we are looking for a few new volunteer families to consider hosting one or two students. We hope you might be interested in assisting us.

This year we have two "Homestay Weekend" options: August 13-15 or August 20-22. Typically, host families entertain students with everyday family activities and interaction in and around the city or the suburbs. Other host families have taken students on trips to the country or weekends to their chalets to get a taste of summer life in Canada. Our Japanese university students are curious to know how we live and to practice their English.

If your family is interested in participating in this rewarding and culturally exciting opportunity, please contact Phil Riopel or Miki Hirasawa at 514-395-5212 for more information. We have scheduled a host family information evening to provide you with more details on the homestay weekend and the participants. As well, you may also wish to visit our website for program information and schedules.

Yours sincerely,

Dan Darrigan
