McGill Varsity athletes kick off annual food drive for Sun Youth

Published: 25 November 2010

MONTREAL - Varsity athletes from McGill University will be conducting their third annual Holiday Food & Clothing Drive on Sunday (Nov. 28) in support of the Sun Youth Community Centre.

A student-driven initiative of the McGill Varsity Sports Council, the event runs from 12 noon to 3 p.m. and athletes will be canvassing for non-perishable food items and gently-used clothing in the student ghetto area and plateau region, bordered by University street, Pine Ave., St. Urbain, Duluth, Coloniale and Prince Arthur.

In addition, collection bins for food and clothing have been set up in the Currie gym until the end of November.

Also, McGill Athletics & Recreation is offering free admission to anyone who brings a non-perishable food item to any varsity basketball, hockey or volleyball home game this weekend.

The undefeated Martlets (2-0) and Redmen (2-0) basketball teams will be playing host to the UQAM Citadins at Love Competition Hall, located inside the Currie Gym, on Saturday (Nov. 27), beginning with the women's game at 6 p.m.

Hockey fans can take advantage of the offer for Saturday night's game when the Guelph Gryphons (8-5-0) are in town to take on the No.3-ranked Redmen (13-0-1) at McConnell Arena. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.

The same offer stands for volleyball fans when the Martlets (8-4) take on the No.5-ranked Montreal Carabins (10-2), Sunday at 2 p.m. in Love Competition Hall.

The Sun Youth Organization has grown into a comprehensive community centre that not only promotes activities - it also provides resources in times of need. A number of McGill athletes serve as mentors or tutors for the children enrolled in Sun Youth's programs. They also volunteer their time to help sort donations and hand out items to the needy.
