McGill soccer women wallop Windsor

MONTREAL - Freshman striker Kristin Pearkes of Vancouver, B.C., scored twice and added an assist as the McGill University women's soccer team walloped the Windsor Lancers 7-0 in preseason play at Molson Stadium, Tuesday.

 

It was the most goals scored by the Martlets since a 9-0 rampage over visiting Bishop's on Oct. 13, 2011. McGill, which led 5-0 at the half, had a 15-0 advantage in shots towards the net, including 10 on target.

 

Five different Martlets hit pay-dirt, including singles from sophomore Rebecca Green of Green's Harbour, Nfld., junior Meghan Bourque of Burlington, Ont., and rookies Melissa St-Onge of St. Lazare, Que., and Zoe Fasoulakis of Vancouver, who was credited with the game-winner on a header in the 22nd minute of play. That goal was one of five tallied in a 13-minute span.

 

The Lancers also conceded an own goal, when Carolyn Lott, a fifth-year defender from London, Ont., accidently deflected the ball past beleaguered 'keeper Tara Bernard-Rae a few minutes before halftime to make the score 4-0.

 

In all, 20 different McGill players, including three goalkeepers, saw action but Pearkes, an engineering major, joined teammate Kendra Bui, a third-year defender from Vancouver, as the only two Martlets to play the full 90 minutes.

 

McGill netminder Victoria Muccilli played the first half and was credited with the win. She shared the shutout with rookies Aidan Mahoney (25 minutes) of Ottawa and Meghan Rye (20 minutes), also from Vancouver.

 

The Martlets, who battled Ottawa to a scoreless draw in the nation's capital the previous night, improved to 1-0-a in preseason play. They will head down the Trans-Canada highway with the Redmen this weekend to participate in the Old Four tournament at U of T. The women open against the Varsity Blues on Saturday at 5 p.m., followed by the Redmen-Toronto matchup at 7:15 p.m.
