McGill sends a Baker's dozen to XC championships
MONTREAL -- The McGill University cross-country running team,
headed by head coach Dennis Barrett and his assistants Mike Babb
and Catherine Megias, are sending six men and seven women to Ste.
Foy, Que., for the CIS national championships this weekend.
In the midst of a rebuilding year, the Redmen finished third of
four teams at the Quebec conference championships, held at Parc La
Baie, in Mandeville, Que., (Oct. 27) and are attempting to become
the second Quebec university team to capture a national
cross-country title. McGill’s best finish was a bronze medal in
1996 championships, when they hosted the event atop Mt.
Royal.
The six Redmen competing at “Nationals” include senior Graydon
Snider of Guelph, Ont., fifth-year senior Ryan Ouckama of Cobourg,
Ont., junior Kenneth Douglas of Montreal, plus three freshman
--Daniel Kramer of Salem, Mass., Maxime Bellemare of Sherbrooke,
Que., and. Alexander Duhault of Calgary, who earned rookie of the
year honours in the Quebec circuit.
A young Martlets squad also had a disappointing season, finishing
second to Laval at the Quebec conference title meet. It marked the
end of their long, 20-year reign as Quebec women's champions. The
McGill women are attempting to become the first QSSF team to
capture a national cross-country title. They are the only Quebec
school to medal at Nationals, with a silver (2006) and a pair of
bronzes (1996, 2001).
The seven Martlet qualifiers include Margaux Pontoreau-Bazinet, a
third-year nursing major from Montreal, plus sophomores Arielle
Beatty of Newmarket, Ont., and Cristina Lo Basso of Montreal, in
addition to three freshmen -- Melanie Myrand of Pointe Claire,
Que., Brittany Therrien of Victoria, B.C., and Charlène Puel, a
native of France, whose father Claude Puel, is head coach of the
Olympique Lyonnais soccer club, seven-time champions of the top
league in France.

Gryphons running for history in Quebec City
OTTAWA (CIS) – The Guelph Gryphons hope to write some history of
their own Saturday when Laval University hosts the 2008 CIS cross
country championships on the historical site of the Plains of
Abraham in Quebec City.

The Gryphons have been the dominant force in recent years in
university cross country running, capturing the last three CIS
banners in women’s competition, and the last two titles and six of
the past nine on the men’s side.
With another team win this weekend, the Gryphon women would tie the
all-time record for consecutive national championships. Since the
inaugural CIS meet was held in 1980, only Western, from 1981 to
1984, and Victoria, from 1998 to 2001, have been able to put
together streaks of four straight women’s titles.
Meanwhile, a victory by the Gryphon men would give them eight team
banners since the inaugural men’s meet in 1963, moving them to
within one of the all-time mark held by Toronto.
Both Guelph teams have resumed their domination this season, the
men topping all seven national rankings published this fall while
the women were No. 1 six of the seven weeks.
Guelph swept the team titles at the 2008 OUA championships held in
Kingston on Oct. 25.
Other conference team champions this fall were the St. Francis
Xavier X-Men and X-Women, who captured double gold in the AUS, and
the Laval Rouge et Or women and Sherbrooke Vert & Or men in the
QSSF. Laval edged McGill by only two points to claim the Quebec
women’s banner.
Canada West doesn’t hold cross country championships. Top finishers
among Canada West runners at the CIS meet are crowned conference
champions.
Individual gold-medal winners at 2008 conference championships were
Toronto’s Megan Brown and Guelph’s Allan Brett in the OUA, StFX
teammates Gina Stewart and David Gerych in the AUS, and Laval’s
Catherine Cormier and Sherbrooke’s James Poulin-Cadovius in the
QSSF.
Sherbrooke’s Alex Genest, the reigning CIS champion and the CIS
rookie of the year in 2006, settled for third at the QSSF meet. The
native of Lac-aux-Sables, Que., has been gradually coming back to
competition this season as he was recovering from health
problems.
One of the most interesting battles to keep an eye on this weekend
could be the fight for individual gold in the women’s race between
Brown and Guelph’s Lindsay Carson, who claimed CIS gold as a rookie
last year.
At the OUA championships two weeks ago, Brown, the 2006 CIS
champion who started her varsity career at Guelph before
transferring to Toronto, beat Carson by 34 seconds over five
kilometres.
“Today was one of the strongest runs I’ve ever ran,” said Brown
following the race. “I ran exactly to my fitness and I’m in the
best shape of my life right now. I’m very pleased with where I’m at
right now.”
The last runners to repeat as CIS champions are Nathalie Côté of
the Ottawa Gee-Gees, who won three straight gold medals from 1996
to 1998, and Cristiano Mauricio of the Windsor Lancers, who claimed
back-to-back individual titles in 2004 and 2005.
The five-kilometre CIS women’s race will get under way at 1 p.m. on
Saturday, with the 10-kilometre men’s event following at 1:40
p.m.

Championnats de cross-country de SIC 2008
Les Gryphons veulent entrer dans l’histoire à Québec
OTTAWA (SIC) – Les Gryphons de Guelph espèrent écrire leur propre
page d’histoire samedi lorsque l’Université Laval accueillera les
championnats de cross-country de SIC 2008 sur le site historique
des Plaines d’Abraham, à Québec.

Les Gryphons se sont avérés la puissance incontestée en
cross-country universitaire au cours des dernières années,
remportant trois bannières féminines de SIC consécutives de même
que deux titres en autant de saisons - et six en neuf ans - du côté
masculin.
Advenant une nouvelle victoire par équipe chez les dame ce
week-end, les Gryphons égaleraient le record de tous les temps de
quatre championnats canadiens consécutifs. Depuis la première
rencontre de SIC en 1980, seulement deux institutions, Western de
1981 à 1984 et Victoria de 1998 à 2001, ont réussi à aligner quatre
titres féminins.
Chez les hommes, une victoire des Gryphons leur procurerait une
huitième bannière depuis le premier championnat masculin de SIC en
1963, une de moins seulement que la marque détenue par
Toronto.
Les deux équipes de Guelph ont poursuivi leur domination cette
saison, les hommes dominant chacun des sept classements canadiens
publiés cet automne, alors que les dames occupaient la tête de six
des sept classements.
Guelph a balayé les bannières par équipe lors des championnats de
la conférence de l’Ontario qui se déroulaient à Kingston, le 25
octobre.
Dans les autres conférences, St. Francis Xavier a remporté les deux
titres par équipe dans les Maritimes, alors que la formation
féminine du Rouge et Or de Laval et l’équipe masculine du Vert
& Or de Sherbrooke se partageaient les honneurs au Québec.
Laval a mérité le titre féminin de la FQSÉ de justesse, ne
devançant McGill que par deux points.
La conférence Canada-Ouest ne tient pas de championnats de
cross-country. Les meilleurs pointeurs individuels de Canada-Ouest
à la rencontre de SIC sont déclarés champions de la
conférence.
Les médaillés d’or individuels au sein des diverses conférences en
2008 ont été Megan Brown de Toronto et Allan Brett de Guelph en
Ontario, les coéquipiers de StFX Gina Stewart et David Gerych dans
l’Atlantique, puis Catherine Cormier de Laval et James
Poulin-Cadovius de Sherbrooke au sein de la FQSÉ.
Champion de SIC en 2007 et recrue par excellence au pays il y a
deux ans, Alex Genest du Vert & Or s’est contenté de la
troisième place aux championnats de la FQSÉ. Le coureur originaire
de Lac-aux-Sables, Qué., est revenu graduellement à la compétition
cet automne après avoir éprouvé des problèmes de santé.
L’une des luttes les plus intéressantes à surveiller samedi sera
assurément la bataille pour l’or chez les dames entre Brown et
Lindsay Carson de Guelph, qui a remporté le titre de SIC à ses
débuts universitaires l’an dernier.
Aux championnats ontariens il y a deux semaines, Brown, championne
de SIC en 2006 qui avait entamé sa carrière universitaire à Guelph
avant de décider de poursuivre ses études à Toronto, a devancé
Carson par 34 secondes sur cinq kilomètres.
« J’ai fait l’une de mes meilleures courses en carrière
aujourd’hui, a dit Brown après l’épreuve. J’ai couru exactement
comme je dois le faire. Je suis dans la meilleure forme de ma vie
en ce moment ».
Les derniers athlètes à avoir défendu avec succès leur couronne
individuelle de SIC sont Nathalie Côté des Gee-Gees d’Ottawa,
championne lors de trois éditions consécutives de 1996 à 1998, et
Cristiano Mauricio des Lancers de Windsor, qui a remporté le titre
masculin en 2004 et 2005.
Le départ de la course féminine de cinq kilomètres est prévue pour
13h samedi, alors que l’épreuve masculine de 10 kilomètres débutera
à 13h40.
