McGill pivot Collin wins Alouettes scholarship

Published: 19 August 2010

MONTREAL - Jonathan Collin, a sophomore quarterback with the McGill Redmen, is one of seven university football players to receive a Montreal Alouettes scholarship.

Joining Collin on the list of bursary recipients from the QUFL is Robert MacKay (Concordia), Maxime Berube (Laval), Jesse Andrews (Bishop's), Jean-Philippe Shoiry (Sherbrooke), Alexandre Gregory (Montreal) and Alexis Rousseau-Saine (Montreal). Bursaries were also handed out  six players in the CEGEP league and 12 others at the high school level.

Collin, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound native of Greenfield Park, Que., who became a starter for the Redmen in Week 2 of his freshman campaign, went on to capture rookie-of-the-year honours last fall in the Quebec University Football League.

His bursary, valued at $1,150, was part of a renewed investment of $115,000 announced by the Alouettes, towards the Quebec Foundation for University Athletics. Since 2004, the Alouettes have committed $280,000 to the Foundation.

"Since the launch of the program... we've continued to see the growth of football in Quebec," said Larry Smith, president and CEO of the Alouettes. "We are proud to have been part of this since rejoining the CFL in 1996 and are even more so since becoming directly involved with this bursary program."

Collin, a 21-year-old education major, ended up leading the league in touchdowns scored with seven in eight games, establishing single-season school records for most TDs scored by a freshman and most by a quarterback. He completed 145 of 288 pass attempts for 1,529 yards, eight TDs and 10 interceptions, ranking fourth among league leaders with an average of 191.1 passing yards per game.
