McGill Law research team to receive large award for research in arbitration and transnational law
The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that its Private Justice and the Rule of Law Research Team was awarded funding for an ambitious program of research entitled “Private Justice and its Laws: Harmonization, Conciliation and Legitimacy”. At $450,000, this is one of the largest peer-reviewed awards ever to have come to the Faculty. Quebec’s granting agency, the Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture, awards these grants following a highly competitive review process the results of which were announced earlier in April.
Principal investigator Fabien Gélinas said “this is a wonderful recognition of the work we have been doing and a tremendous boost to our ability to consolidate McGill’s international leadership role in this exciting area.”
“Competition for these grants is fierce, said McGill’s Law Dean Daniel Jutras, and this one comes to us at a very opportune moment given the cuts recently imposed by the government. It recognizes our undisputed expertise in this area of research, which is at the core of our Faculty’s interest in multiple legal traditions and plural normative sites.”
This great news comes on the heels of the appointment of professors Gélinas and Bachand as the first Norton Rose Faculty Scholars in Arbitration and Commercial Law.
The Research Team was established in 2006 by Professor Fabien Gélinas, who brought together a handful of colleagues to create research synergies in dispute resolution and transnational law. The original members of the Team were professors Frédéric Bachand, H. Patrick Glenn and Geneviève Saumier. The Team has now grown to include McGill professor emeritus Armand de Mestral and professors Marie-Claude Rigaud and Andrea Bjorklund, respectively from Université de Montréal and the University of California at Davis. Professor Bjorklund was visiting at McGill last year as a guest of the L. Yves Fortier Chair in International Arbitration and International Commercial Law and has maintained very close ties with the Faculty. The Team also works with collaborators from other research centers.
Daniel Jutras concluded: “It is obvious to me that McGill will continue to grow in stature as an undisputed leader in innovative thinking on issues surrounding arbitration and transnational law. Congratulations to Fabien and the Team.”
About Fabien Gélinas
Associate Professor Gélinas teaches and conducts research in the areas of international dispute resolution, contracts law and legal theory. Formerly General Counsel of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, he is a member of the Quebec Bar and acts as arbitrator and as consultant on dispute resolution and legal reform. He is a Norton Rose Faculty Scholar in Arbitration and Commercial Law.
