McGill coach and grad win Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards

Published: 18 November 2010

MONTREAL - Peter Carpenter, head coach of the McGill swim team and McGill graduate Mike Babcock, bench boss of the Detroit Red Wings, are among 43 individuals who have been selected to receive a 2010 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award, given annually to recognize coaches whose athletes have excelled at world championships and/or the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Carpenter, a 36-year-old native of Pointe Claire, Que., won his award for his work with McGill swimmer Valérie Grand'Maison, a vision-impaired athlete who won one gold, four silvers and a bronze at the 2010 world para-swimming championships. Carpenter is in his second year as head coach at McGill. He previously guided the Pointe Claire swim club and the Quebec provincial team.

Babcock, a 47-year-old from Saskatoon who played hockey at McGill from 1983 to 1987, guided the Canadian Olympic hockey team to gold in Vancouver last February. It was his fifth major title won as a head coach, which includes a Stanley Cup with Detroit (2008), the IIHF world championship (2004), the IIHF world junior championship (1997) and the CIS championship with the University of Lethbridge (1994).
