Lions tame tennis Redmen 4-3

Published: 11 October 2009

TORONTO -- Michel Berthelemot and Alexandre Halverson posted straight set singles victories playing at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively, but it was not enough as the York University Lions took a bite out of the visiting McGill Redmen with a 4-3 victory in men's university tennis at the Rexall Centre in Toronto, Saturday.

Sixth-seeded Yvan Bodart also won in two sets. After splitting the matches 3-3 in singles action, McGill could not take the doubles point and lost the fixture. Leading 3-2 in favor of McGill, Michael Hibberd was up 4-2 in the third set and only five points away from handing the Redmen a win against the strong Lions. Unfortunately, he could not close it out and doubles matches were required to declare a winner.

Berthelemot and Adrien Dupont raced to a 6-1 win for the early lead but McGill dropped the other two matches by a score of 6-4 to surrender the doubles point to York.

The Redmen own a 2-2 overall record and will play the Montreal Carabins at Uniprix Stadium on Oct. 17.
