The Mayday Fund today announced the selection of six experts in pain management to be Fellows of The Mayday Pain & Society Fellowship. The new Fellows come from across the United States and Canada, specializing in a wide range of health care disciplines, including anesthesiology, neuroscience, pain policy, pediatric care and psychology. The Fellowship program is in its tenth and final year.

The Fellowship provides pain care leaders with skills to communicate effectively about pain, the impact it has on quality of life, and its implications on clinical and policy issues.

“More than ever, we need the voices of pain researchers, clinicians and advocates to raise awareness about the urgent problem of pain in America,” said Russell K. Portenoy, MD, Chairman of The Mayday Fellowship Advisory Committee and Director of the MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care. “The Mayday Fellowship will equip this year’s Fellows with the skills necessary to expand the conversation about access to care, treatment disparities, the need for pain research, and other critical aspects of the problem.”

Since the beginning of the program in 2004, the Mayday Fellowship Advisory Committee has selected 60 Fellows, including this new class.

“The Mayday Fund Trustees welcome the class of 2014. They join an impressive group of advocates,” said Christina M. Spellman, Executive Director of The Mayday Fund. “The Trustees believe that public education and advocacy hold the potential to make a difference in how pain is understood, cared for, and treated. The Fellows will help to reach these goals.”
