ST. EUSTACHE, Que. -- An own goal proved costly for the Montreal Carabins as the McGill Martlets battled them to a 1-1 draw in the season opener of the 2009 QSSF women s indoor soccer league at the Saint Eustache Sport Complex, Saturday.

V. Laverdiere opened the scoring for the Carabins, the defending Quebec outdoor league champions, in the 10th minute of play.

McGill tied the contest on an own goal in the 83rd minute when a corner kick from Sophie Joyal was deflected by goalkeeper Emilie Mercier into her own net.

Both teams had some good stretches in the game with the carabins controlling the game early. The Martlets showed good intensity and created more chances over the 90 minutes.

The Martlets generated more offensive chances in the last 30 minutes and their passing game looked sharper as the game wore on.

"It was a good start for us, very encouraging," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "We know we can challenge that team."

The next game will on January 24 against Sherbrooke in Saint Eustache at 1:00 pm.
