Hurdle jump-starts Redmen offence, pots pair at Old Four tourney

Published: 29 August 2009

LONDON, ONT - Midfielder Jeremy Hurdle of Ambler, Penn., tallied twice as the McGill men's soccer team doubled Toronto 2-1 at the Old Four tournament in London, Saturday. The Redmen advanced to Sunday's finale against Western Ontario, who also qualified after defeating Queen's 2-0.

McGill outshot the Varsity Blues 5-2 and improved to 3-0 in pre-season play, including a scrimmage against an under-18 team from Lac St. Louis.

Hurdle, a 19-year-old geography sophomore, netted the opening marker in the 11th minute after converting a crossing pass from Ottawa native Gareth Pugh, who had created a fast-break counter-attack.

Hurdle put the Redmen ahead 2-0 in the 32nd minute, firing a left-footed one-timer after receiving a corner kick from Yohann Capolungo, a sophomore from France.

"Hurdle was well-positioned throughout the game," said new Redmen bench boss David Simon. "His play was very consistent and that is very promising for a second-year player."

McGill received another strong outing from new goalkeeper Jean-Lou Gosselin, a transfer from UQAM, who was under fire when the Redmen seemed to run out of steam in the final 20 minutes.

"Gosselin and Capolungo were keys to the victory and I was satisfied with the outcome but we looked somewhat fragile defensively after they scored in the 70th minute," noted Simon.
