Grammy Nominations for Schulich alumni and professors

The Recording Academy has announced the nominees for the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Included in this list were several nominees from Schulich.  

Sound Recording Graduate Nick Squire, MMus'08, is nominated for Best Engineered Album, Classical: Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9 — Shawn Murphy & Nick Squire, engineers; Tim Martyn, mastering engineer (Andris Nelsons & Boston Symphony Orchestra) and also Best Orchestral Field: Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9 — Andris Nelsons, conductor (Boston Symphony Orchestra) - Nick Squire, engineer.  Nominated in the category Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance: Fitelberg: Chamber Works — ARC Ensemble- Carl Talbot,  BMus’91, MMus’93,  recording engineer.

Darcy James Argue's group Secret Society is nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album: Real Enemies. Performers include Darcy James Argue, BMus'97, piano and Mike Fahie, BMus'98, trombone.

Other nominations with Schulich connections include in the category Best Choral Performance:  Steinberg: Passion Week — Steven Fox, conductor (The Clarion Choir)  - produced by Sound Recording Professor Martha De Francisco,  and mastered by James Clemens-Seely, MMus'10, with performance by Esteli Gomez, MMus'11, and in the category Best Classical Instrumental Solo: Adams, J.: Scheherazade.2 — Leila Josefowicz; David Robertson, conductor (Chester Englander; St. Louis Symphony) recorded by Sound Recording Professor Richard King.  In addition, singer Philippe Sly, BMus'11, sings the role of Antonio in Mozart's Le Nozzi di Figaro, directed by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, nominated in the Best Opera Recording category.

The GRAMMY awards are voted on by The Recording Academy's Voting membership, who represent all genres and creative disciplines, including recording artists, songwriters, producers, mixers, and engineers. Final-round GRAMMY ballots will be mailed Dec. 14 and are due Jan. 13, 2017, when they will be tabulated and the results kept secret until the 59th GRAMMY Awards telecast.
