ON GOLDEN POND: Martlets crowned national champs

KINGSTON, Ont. -– McGill narrowly won the freestyle team routine title on a tie-breaker over Calgary to capture the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League championship in Kingston, Ont., Saturday.

Both teams posted identical scores of 75.333 points in the final event, the freestyle team routine, but McGill was deemed champions after officials implemented tie-breaking procedures from Synchro Canada.

The winning McGill squad, coached by Cassandra Bilogan, was composed of
Carly Hourigan (Burlington, Ont), Emily Gilfallin (Vancouver, BC), Laura Swift (Pointe Claire, Que), Marie-Eve Chartier (St. Augustin, Que), Michelle Larocque (Pointe Claire, Que), Rebecca Neirinck (Beaconsfield, Que), Krystina Antonecchia (Beaconsfield, Que), Jennifer Gill-Wilson (Trois-Rivieres, Que), Lynn MacRae (Dollard des Ormeaux, Que) and Amy Marrow (Ottawa, Ont).

Host Queen’s finished third -- in another tie-breaker -- over a joint team representing Waterloo and Laurier. McGill's B-squad, known as the "Red" team, finished eighth.

In the novice team freestyle routine, Western scored 61 points to edge McGill (58.5) and McMaster (56.5) on the podium.

The novice solo technical routine was captured by McGill’s Ji Wei Yang, a first-year medical student from St. Laurent, Que. Kim Moffit from the joint Waterloo-Laurier team was next on the podium, followed by Trent’s Laura Albrecht in third.

In the duet freestyle routine, Hamilton native’s Christa Schnarr and Melynda Saunders from McMaster beat out Rebecca Jasper and Lauren Lepage from the University of Toronto for first place.

In the novice duet routine, the University of Guelph’s Laura Szigatti and Tracy Messenger were first overall.

In the solo freestyle routine, Alberta’s Kim Phillips edged out McGill’s Jennifer Gill-Wilson for gold. Alberta’s Keesa Elicksen was third.

Western’s Krista Hayes took top honours in the Athletes with a Disability category, wowing the crowd with her solo routine.
