Gee-Gees upend soccer Martlets, halt McGill's win streak at five
MONTREAL - The visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees surprise d McGill 2-0 in women's university soccer preseason play at Molson Stadium, Wednesday, snapping McGill's win streak at five.
Ottawa fired shots past freshman 'keeper Valérie Labbé in the fifth and 50th minutes of play, handing Labbé her first taste of defeat in six CIS starts.
"We had a very poor first half, were totally out of pace and did not have the focus and game awareness needed to win against that kind of team," said a disappointed Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "The second half was played more positively on our part but technically, we were not sharp enough to score despite having some good chances."
"Our final cuts were made two days ago and I think that the girls were a bit complacent. We did not show the drive that we had over the first five games.
The Martlets, who fell to 5-1-0 overall, will get an opportunity to correct any deficiencies in their game over Labour Day weekend in Fredericton. The will play unranked UNB on Saturday (Sept. 4), followed by a game versus No.8-UPEI on Sunday. It will be McGill's final fine tune-up before the season starts in earnest on Sept. 10, when Sherbrooke visits Molson Stadium.
