Field hockey squad goes undefeated on the road, still in hunt for playoff berth

KINGSTON -- Camille St-Cyr scored in the 51st minute and the McGill women's field hockey team hung on for a 1-1 tie gainst Queen's in the second game of a doubleheader played in Kingston, Friday.

The Martlets, who left Montreal at 5 a.m., for a pair of early-morning games, blanked Carleton 2-0 in the earlier contest.

The two results moved McGill into sixth-place in the eight-team OUA with a 2-3-3 record in the OUA. The Martlets have nine points and sit four points behind Western (4-2-1), which holds down the fifth and final playoff berth.

Against the Ravens, Holly Millar, a junior from West Vancouver, B.C., netted the game-winner, connecting in the 15th-minute of play. Freshman Rachel Berta of St. Mary's, Ont., added an insurance marker in the 39 minutes later.

"We took control early in the Carleton game and had numerous scoring chances but their net seemed too narrow and our shots always seemed to be a couple of inches off the posts," said Jean-Pierre Turpain, co-head coach of the Martlets. "Fortunately, Rachel realigned her shot and scored on a short corner to seal the win for us."

"Against Queen's, we played a brillant first half with our defence playing a good transition game to get the ball to the centrefielders, who then relayed it  to the forwards. After that, we played a bit too defensive and Queen's tied it with five minutes remaining."

McGill will head back down Highway 401 for three critical games in Mississauga, Oct. 17-18. They will take on Western (4-2-1), York (4-4-2) and Waterloo (5-2-2), and must come away with at leat four points to have a shot at post-season play.
