Emails requesting continued subscription to mailing lists – due to Canadian Anti-Spam Law

News

Published: 27 Jun 2014

You may recently have received one or more emails requesting that you click a link to "Continue receiving promotions" from an organization or commercial company. As of July 1, 2014 the Canadian government will pass new anti-spam legislation (CASL), which imposes severe penalties for organizations that do not abide by the laws concerning mailing lists. As a result, many companies have been diligently sending their mailing list members validation notices, asking them to confirm their continued participation in the list.

Please beware that some organizations may attempt to take advantage of the situation and actually spam and attract new members. Also, the wording of each email may be different -- most require you to click a link to remain on the list; however some will keep you on the list unless you click an unsubscribe link. Malicious entities may even masquerade as legitimate organizations and use this opportunity to trick unsuspecting readers into downloading viruses or other malware.

The bottom line is:

  • Read each message carefully
  • Make sure the organization is who they claim to be (check the URLs by rolling your mouse over links within the email)
  • Decide if you want to remain on legitimate mailing lists and take action if required
