ELECTRICAL SHUTDOWN – SAD Building

Please be advised that there will be two major electrical shutdowns in the Strathcona Buildings on:

Saturday June 4th, 2011 from 6:00 am to Sunday June 5th, 2011 at 10:00pm (inclusive) and again

Saturday June 11th, 2011 from 6:00 am to Sunday, June 12th, at 10:00pm (inclusive).

On Saturday June 4th, during the first 2 hours from 6am to 8am, the entire building will be without power so that electricians can transfer the entire building power loads on to the Emergency Generator.  Power in the entire building will be back on at 8:00am on Saturday (except for the EM Centre) and will run off the emergency generator for the duration of the shutdown.  The EM Centre will be in complete darkness for the duration of the shutdown until June 5th at 10:00pm.  During the final two hours, from 8pm to 10pm, the entire building will again be without power as cables feeding the Generator will need to be disconnected and then reconnected back into the new main building distribution panel.  Please note that during the first and last two hours of this shutdown, ventilation will also be down.

On Saturday June 11th, as of 6am, the entire building will be without regular (Hydro Quebec) power for the duration of the shutdown (until Sunday 10:00pm.) However, the new emergency outlets and lighting that have been installed throughout the building will be in complete working order.  As such, after the first shutdown on June 4th and 5th has been completed, we will be sending another notice advising all occupants to plug equipment into the new emergency outlets installed.   Then this second shutdown will proceed and all equipment will be protected via the new emergency power supply.  During this second shutdown all remaining electrical cables and breakers will be transferred to the new electrical panels.

These shutdowns are necessary to complete the transfer of power from the existing electrical panels to the new electrical panels which have been installed.

Please note that a limited number of generators are available in order to supply temporary power during the crucial two hours at the beginning and end of the shutdown on the 4th and 5th of June.  Should you absolutely require such backup power please advise us immediately.

PLEASE TAKE NECESSARY ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR EQUIPMENT AND EXPERIMENTS.

We apologize for the inconvenience these shutdowns will cause, but are required for the transfer of power.

Should you have any questions, please contact our office at extension 7170 or buildingsec.med [at] mcgill.ca.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation.
