MONTREAL - Justin Darlington of Montreal and Anneth Him-Lazarenko of Ste. Dorothée, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 28, 2010.

Darlington, a 6-foot-4, 169-pound high jumper, earned performance-of-the-meet honours for the field events at the Quebec university track and field championship hosted by McGill over the weekend.  The 21-year-old marketing freshman won gold and qualified for the upcoming CIS championships with a school record leap of 2.07 metres in the men's high jump at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse. It was the third time this season that he had broken the McGill record, surpassing his previous best of 2.04m. He previously attended J.Clarke Richardson high school in Ajax, Ont.

Him-Lazarenko, a 5-foot-10 forward on the women's basketball team, scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed seven rebounds as McGill upset second-place UQAM 83-68 to clinch a playoff berth on the final day of the regular season, Saturday. It was the highest single-game point-total by a member of the Martlets in 53 games overall, dating back to a 35-point performance on Feb. 24, 2008. The 22-year-old education sophomore made 14 of 20 attempts from the field and went 4-for-7 from the foul-line in 31 minutes of court time. She ended up leading the league in scoring with 15.0 points per game and was third in rebounding with a 7.8 average, despite missing the first three games of the season while recovering from knee surgery. She previously attended Vanier College.
