CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#13): Three McGill teams remain in national rankings

Published: 24 November 2009

OTTAWA (CIS) - Three McGill teams have remained inthe CIS Top 10 national rankings this week. The women's hockey Martlets, who have won 64 consecutive games against CIS opponents, remained at No. 1. The hockey Redmen have moved up two spots to No. 5 in the nation and the volleyball Martlets remained in the No.10 spot after sweeping all four interlocking games against AUS teams.

Despite the fact they haven't played a single set in over a week, the University of Calgary Dinos find themselves atop the CIS men's volleyball rankings for the first time in over a decade.

Other national leaders stay put this week with reigning CIS champions UBC (women's volleyball), McGill (women's hockey), UNB (men's hockey), Simon Fraser (women's basketball) and Carleton (men's basketball) holding on to their No. 1 positions.

Men's volleyball

The Dinos, who enjoyed a break in their Canada West schedule this past weekend, move up one spot and reach the top of the national coaches' poll for the first time since the 1998-99 season following a setback by former No. 1 McMaster (7-1), which drop all the way to No. 4 after being upset in four games by 3-5 Laurier on Saturday.

Calgary, which captured its last CIS title in 1993, was ranked No. 1 on back-to-back weeks on November 25 and December 2 of 1998. The Dinos host the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday and Saturday for a two-match series between 5-1 teams.

Women's volleyball

The two-time reigning CIS champion Thunderbirds easily improved to 8-0 in conference play with a pair of straight-set dominations of Thompson Rivers. UBC hosts Simon Fraser (1-7) Friday night for its lone duel of the weekend.

Women's hockey

Two-time defending national champion McGill enjoyed a break in the QSSF schedule last week but still managed to move closer to Alberta's record of 67 consecutive overall wins against CIS opponents with a trio of non-conference victories over No. 5 StFX, 4-0, Saint Mary's, 11-0, and Dalhousie, 7-2.

The Martlets (7-0), whose last loss was a 2-1 shootout affair against Alberta on December 30, 2007, can tie the Pandas CIS mark with wins in each of their final three road games of the semester, beginning on Friday against No. 8 Montreal (7-1-1). McGill also plays at Carleton on Saturday and at Concordia on Dec. 5.

Men's hockey

The University Cup champion V-Reds improved to 11-0 in conference play with a 2-0 shutout of UPEI (5-5-2) in their lone outing of the past week last Friday.

Back in 2007-08, when they set a number of AUS records en route to a remarkable 26-1-1 mark, the V-Reds also started the regular season with 11 consecutive victories before dropping a 5-4 shootout decision to the Moncton Aigles Bleus, the team they are set to visit on Friday night when they go for win number 12. The defending CIS champs also host cross-town rival St. Thomas on Saturday.

Women's basketball

Defending national champion Simon Fraser didn't take the court last weekend as its two scheduled games against Fraser Valley were postponed. The Clan (5-0), who have now led 31 of 32 coaches' polls dating back to the start of the 2007-08 season, host Lethbridge (4-4) and Calgary (5-3) this week.

Men's basketball

The reigning CIS champion Ravens (6-0), winners of six of the last seven W.P. McGree trophies, were simply too good for Laurier and Waterloo last week as they rolled to 97-54 and 94-67 victories over their OUA West opponents.

Carleton, which is No. 1 for the 31st time in 32 polls dating back to the start of the 2007-08 campaign, visits undefeated Lakehead (6-0) and No. 3 McMaster (5-1) Friday and Saturday.
