CIS Top 10 Tuesday: Three McGill teams ranked nationally
OTTAWA (CIS) - The McGill Martlets and UNB Varsity Reds remain atop the CIS hockey world while Western and Ottawa move to No. 1 in women's and men's track and field in the final national rankings of the fall semester.
Women's hockey
The two-time defending CIS champion Martlets go into the December break with a perfect 10-0 QSSF mark after they outshot cross-town rival Concordia 52-9 en route to a 3-0 shutout in their lone outing of the past weekend, on Saturday.
It was McGill's 67th consecutive overall victory against a Canadian university team, tying the CIS all-time record set by the Alberta Pandas between 2003 and 2005.
McGill's streak includes a 32-0 record against teams that have been ranked in the national Top 10 poll. The result also marked the Martlets' 30th straight win over the Stingers since losing a 2-1 decision on Feb. 5, 2006.
The Martlets have a 23-day layoff for exams before they attempt to
break the Pandas' mark on Dec. 28 when resuming play against
Toronto at the Theresa Humes tourney, hosted by Concordia.
The OUA-leading Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (15-0) and Canada
West-leading Alberta (14-0) also have unblemished regular season
marks at the break.
The Hawks, who have lost the last two CIS finals to McGill, have been No. 2 behind the Martlets in all 10 coaches' polls this fall. The Pandas are at No. 3 for the eighth straight week after opening the season at No. 5.
Men's hockey
The reigning University Cup champion Varsity Reds improved to 15-0 in conference play over the weekend. While they easily defeated UPEI 7-0 on Friday, the V-Reds needed overtime for the fourth time this season on Sunday to edge No. 8 Saint Mary's (9-3-3) 2-1.
UNB, which has topped each of the eight media polls this fall, was a unanimous choice at No. 1 for the seventh straight week thanks to 18 first-place votes. The V-Reds are on pace to improve on their AUS-record 26-1-1 mark from 2007-08, when they opened the campaign with 11 wins.
The Canada West-leading Alberta Golden Bears (14-1-1), who were inactive over the past seven days, are second in the nation for the eighth straight week.
The OUA West-leading Western Ontario Mustangs (14-2-0), CIS finalists a year ago, remain at No. 3 for the third week in a row after they edged Windsor 3-2 in overtime to go into the break on a 14-game winning streak.
