CIS Men’s Hockey Top 10 (#5) : Redmen remain No. 2 in nation

Published: 15 November 2011

OTTAWA (CIS) - The reigning national champion University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds top the CIS men's hockey rankings for the fifth time in as many polls this season.

There are no changes in the top six this week as the top-ranked V-Reds (8-1-1) are followed in order by the No. 2 McGill Redmen (9-1-2), No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies (7-1-1), No. 4 Western Ontario Mustangs (8-0-2), No. 5 Moncton Aigles Bleus (8-2-0) and No. 6 Alberta Golden Bears (8-2-2).

The Acadia Axemen (6-3-1) are the big winners in the new poll moving up three spots to No. 7. The Manitoba Bisons (6-2-2) and Lakehead Thunderwolves (9-3-0) both drop one position to No. 8 and No. 9, respectively, while the Nipissing Lakers (8-2-3), unranked last Tuesday, show up at No. 10.

UNB received 16 of 17 first-place votes from the national media panel with the remaining nod going to McGill.

The V-Reds picked up three out of a possible four points on the road over the past weekend, dominating Dalhousie 9-2 before dropping a 6-5 shootout decision against No. 7 Acadia.

The University Cup champs saw their lead atop the AUS standings shrink to a single point however as No. 5 Moncton continued to impress with a 3-2 overtime win over StFX and a 5-4 shootout victory over Saint Mary's.

Moncton visits UNB in Fredericton on Sunday afternoon for what promises to be the "game of the week" in CIS men's hockey.

In the OUA East, the second-ranked Redmen lost 3-1 to archrival UQTR last Wednesday in Trois-Rivières but bounced right back on Friday with a 3-2 defeat of Queen's.

In Canada West, the No. 3 Huskies enjoyed a break in their conference schedule last week. Saskatchewan trails Alberta by three points in the standings but has three games in hand.

In the OUA West, the No. 4 Mustangs remained the only team in the country without a loss in regulation in league play thanks to a 4-2 win over Waterloo and a 9-3 rout against Laurier.
