Published: 23 November 2009

MONTREAL - Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., and Matthew Thornhill of Ile-Bizard, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 22, 2009.

Chartrand, a 5-foot-10 defenceman with the No.1-ranked Martlets hockey team, scored three goals and added seven assists during McGill's successful three-game road trip to the Maritimes. A third-year physical education major, she was credited with one assist in a 5-0 win at St. Francis Xavier on Friday, scored once and added four helpers in an 11-0 victory over Saint Mary's on Saturday and tallied twice to go along with a pair of assists in a 7-2 conquest at Dalhousie. Her performance played a major role in McGill extending their win streak to 64 games over CIS opponents. A former member of the Canadian national team, Chartrand previously attended École Polyvalante Saint-Joseph.

Thornhill, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard with the basketball Redmen, scored 51 points in addition to grabbing 18 rebounds and registering four steals, two blocked shots and three assists in two games last week. The 23-year-old finance senior shot an impressive 50 per cent from the floor (16/32), 53.8 from three-point range (7/13) and 75 per cent from the foul-line (12/16). Thornhill had a spectacular 35-point performance in a 102-88 victory over Bishop's last Friday, then achieved a "double-double" in a 69-65 loss at Concordia on Saturday, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. He joined the Redmen in 2006 out of Dawson College.
