The Cedars Cancer Institute of the MUHC Annual Raffle and Auction

Published: 27 November 2006

The Cedars Cancer Institute of the MUHC is holding its annual Raffle and Abracadabra Auction on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at Le Windsor. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art MRI with biopsy capability for the Cedars Breast Clinic of the MUHC. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Cedars Office at 514-843-1606 or purchasing them online at www.cedars.ca.

The new MRI system, known as the GE Sentinelle system with unique GE imaging software, is described as "the first unit of its kind in a hospital setting in Quebec" by Dr. Robert Lisbona, Chairman of Radiology, MUHC.

With the combination of high resolution breast MRI and computer assisted detection (CAD), specialized radiologists can detect cancers as small as 3 mm. These lesions require biopsy confirmation of malignancy, which is not always possible with standard ultrasound or stereotactic biopsy. This new MRI technology will help the patient and surgeon to make critical decisions as to the choice of breast conserving surgery or mastectomy, and will assist the oncologist in assessing tumour response to selected chemotherapy.

Dr. Henry Shibata, Chair of the Cedars Medical Advisory Committee, stated, "Cedars is committed to providing the best diagnostic equipment for oncology care at the MUHC, and Cedars is delighted to be the first to bring this new technology to the Cedars Breast Clinic to give hope to women in our community."

The Cedars Cancer Institute raises money for diagnostic cancer equipment, fellowships, research and education programs as well as funds the CanSupport/Faire Face program assisting cancer patients and their families at the MUHC.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and support this inspiring endeavour. Please buy your raffle tickets to support this special diagnostic equipment.
