CBC - Immunology network to coordinate research

Published: 13 December 2011

A network that will research the body’s immune system and new vaccines for infectious diseases, AIDS, cancer and transplants has been created. Seven universities across Canada — University of Western Ontario, McGill University, University of Toronto, McMaster University, University of British Columbia, University of Manitoba and Dalhousie University — have formed the CIHR Human Immunology Network. Funded by a $600,000 grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the network will pay for and promote clinical research.

The CIHR Human Immunology Network was organized because of lessons learned during the outbreak of Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS in 2003. The illness highlighted the lack of a national network of immunologists who could share their research findings.
