MONTREAL - Yohann Capolungo , a senior midfielder from France, came off the bench to score the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute of play as 10th-ranked McGill shutout No. 8-UQAM 1-0 in their Quebec university men's soccer opener, Sunday.
Goalkeeper Matt Gilmour, a six-foot junior from North Vancouver, B.C., turned aside five shots to earn the goose-egg.
The Redmen dominated from start to finish, holding a 20-5 territorial advantage in shots directed toward the net, a 13-2 edge in crosses and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.
"We played a solid season opener and our work ethic was excellent," said McGill head coach David Simon. "We must continue to train hard and play with the same intensity if we want to be successful this year. Hats off to our defensive play, in general. Offensively, we must work on being more efficient in front of the net as we had 10 shots and scored only once. This needs to be improved."
McGill (1-0) will host Concordia (1-1) at Molson Stadium, Friday, then head to Quebec City on Sept. 18 to play Laval in a rematch of the 2009 CIS championship gold-medal game.
