BLACKBERRY - CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#22) : Martlet and Redmen pucksters remain among nation's best

Published: 22 February 2011

MONTREAL - Both hockey teams from McGill University continue to dominate the CIS weekly Top 10 national rankings.

The top-ranked Martlets, who finished their season at 20-0 after 2-1 and 5-2 victories over Montreal and Concordia, respectively, will put their 101-game win streak against QUHL opponents on the line when they open a best-of-three semifinal series Wednesday against fourth-place Carleton at McConnell Arena. Game 2  is slated for the Carleton Ice Palace on Friday at 3:30 pm, followed by Game 3, if needed, on Sunday afternoon at McGill. The Martlets swept all five confrontations with Carleton this season, winning 6-0, 6-1, 2-1 (OTS), 3-0 and 2-1.

The Redmen are ranked No.2 for 12th time in 15 ranking periods this season. They own a 31-3-3 record overall after sweeping Ottawa 2-1 and 10-5 in the OUA East quarter-final series last week. McGill opens a best-of-three semifinal series against fourth-seeded Nipissing on Wednesday in North Bay, Ont. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) are slated for McConnell Arena on Saturday and Sunday night. During the regular season, McGill swept their two-game series with the Lakers, winning 9-4 in North Bay and 5-3 at McConnell Arena.

In swimming, the Calgary Dinos top the women's and men's rankings as they get set to defend both CIS championship titles in their own pool, starting on Thursday. Calgary swept the national banners for the first time in school history a year ago. The 2011 CIS meet concludes on Saturday with preliminaries kicking off at 10 a.m. Mountain Time and finals at 6 p.m. MT daily.

In wrestling, the Calgary women and Regina men are seeded No. 1 going into the CIS meet set for Friday and Saturday at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. New national champions will be crowned on Saturday as Simon Fraser - which now competes in the NCAA - swept the team banners last season.

In other CIS sports, Saskatchewan (women's basketball), Carleton (men's basketball), McGill (women's hockey), UNB (men's hockey) and Windsor (women's & men's track and field) all maintain their No. 1 status.
