BLACKBERRY CIS TOP 10 Tuesday (#17): Four McGill teams ranked this week

Published: 18 January 2011

MONTREAL -- Four McGill teams find themselves in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Top 10 national rankings this week. The Martlets and Redmen hockey teams are ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, while the men's swim team has remained ninth and the women's volleyball squad crept in for the first time this season, with a debut at No.10.

In women's hockey, No. 1 ranked McGill, which sports a 12-0 record, had a bye in their schedule last weekend. The Martlets return to the ice Sunday afternoon for a home tilt against cross-town rival Montreal Carabins (6-6-2).

In men's hockey, the hockey Redmen moved up one spot to No.2 in the nation in the wake of a 5-4 vicory over Concordia, combined with Alberta's two-game split with Lethbridge. The No. 1 team , the UNB Varsity Reds (15-4-0) outscored Moncton (6-11-2) 7-4 on the road last Friday and then returned home on Saturday to win a Top-10 battle against No. 7 UPEI (10-6-3), 2-1 in overtime.

In men's swimming, the Redmen remained No. 9 after a third-place finish at the Quebec Cup III meet in Quebec City last weekend.

In women's volleyball, the Martlets have finally cracked the Top 10 after a 3-1 win over Sherbrooke and a 3-1 setback on the road to third-ranked Laval. This week, the McGill women have a bye and will return to action on Jan. 28 when they play host to the Montreal Carabins.

The Trinity Western University Spartans are ranked number one for the first time in school history. The Spartans, who went winless in their first CIS season back in 1999-2000, overtook the three-time defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds, who drop one spot in the new rankings and are now tied with Laval at No. 2. The Spartans (9-1) enjoyed a bye in the Canada West schedule last weekend and will be back on the court on Friday night for the first of two home games versus the No. 7 Calgary Dinos (6-4). Trinity Western is currently tied atop the conference standings with No. 2 UBC (9-3) but has two games in hand.

The reigning CIS champion Thunderbirds, who had topped the last three weekly polls, drop one position after splitting a doubleheader at home against the Dinos. UBC won the series opener in five sets on Friday but lost the rematch on Saturday, also in five games.

In men's volleyball, the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or easily improved to 11-0 in Quebec conference action last Friday with a straight-set win at Montreal (3-9).

In women's basketball, Saskatchewan (12-2) was dominant in their first weekend as the top-ranked team in the country. The Huskies travelled to Winnipeg and returned with a pair of victories over Manitoba (3-11), 82-67 and 82-68.

In men's basketball, No. 1 Carleton (14-0) remained the only undefeated team in the country last weekend with a pair of wins in Kingston. The Ravens defeated Queen's (2-11) 86-73 before downing RMC (0-13) by 121-40.
