CALGARY - McGill swimmer Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., has won gold on opening day of the CIS championships, a three-day meet hosted by the University of Calgary.

Bielby, a 21-year-old electrical engineering junior, won the men's 400-metre individual medley, touching the wall in four minutes, 13.60 seconds.  The 5-foot-8 middle distance specialist finished well ahead of silver medalist David Dimitrov from the University of Calgary, who was clocked at 4:17.33.

Bielby now owns five CIS gold medals over his three years at McGill, breaking the school career record held by Francois Castonguay (two golds in 2005 and two more in 2006). Bielby also owns a silver and a couple of bronze medals for  eight CIS medals overall, the second-highest career total ever by a McGill male swimmer, behind Alexandre Pichette's 10 (2 golds, 3 silvers, 5 bronzes) and equal to the eight previously won by David Allard (1-1-6).
