Bettez bops, Martlets roll to longest win streak in CIS history

MONTREAL - Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., scored once and added two assists as No.1-ranked McGill shook off the rust of a 23-day layoff and dumped Toronto 4-1 at Concordia's Theresa Humes women's hockey tournament, Monday.

It was McGill's 68th consecutive victory against a Canadian university opponent, breaking the CIS record set by Alberta between 2003 and 2005. The current streak includes a 33-0 record against teams that have been ranked in the CIS Top 10 poll.

The Martlets, who improved to 14-0 against CIS teams this season, had a lopsided 46-9 edge in shots, including a 19-2 margin in the middle stanza and a 13-2 edge in the final period.

All five goals were scored on the power play as McGill went 4-for-11 and the Varsity Blues were 1-for-4.

Bettez opened the scoring at 4:05 but Toronto's Amanda Fawns replied just over two minutes later.

Bettez then set up the next two goals, including the game-winner by senior Carly Hill of Dorval, Que., at 46 seconds of the middle period, followed by Rebecca Martindale, a senior from Kingston, Ont., who made it 3-1 at 18:01.

Junior forward Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont., snuffed out any hopes of a Blues comeback when she scored at 16:56 of the final period.

McGill freshman Taylor Salisbury of Surrey registered only eight saves to improve her overall record to 8-2-0. U of T netminder Kendyl Valenta made 42 saves in a losing cause.

McGill meets 10th ranked Guelph on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and can wrap up their fourth straight Humes tourney title with a win over fourth-ranked Manitoba on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
