Bearcats pounce on Redmen in NCAA-CIS hoops matchup

CINCINNATI, OH -- Tristan Renaud-Tremblay of Terrebonne, Que., scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds but it was insufficient as McGill suffered a 75-41 loss to the NCAA's University of Cincinnati Bearcats at Fifth Third Arena, Tuesday.

Renaud-Tremblay started the game with six consecutive points to give the Redmen an early lead that they increased to 10-3 and 14-8, with all 14 points coming from the 6-foot-7, 220-pound junior, who ended up going 10-for-22 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul-line.

The Bearcats rallied to take an 18-16 lead with six minutes remaining in the opening stanza and never trailed after that.

Senior guard Dion Dixon of Chicago paced a trio of Cincinnati double-digit scorers with 20 points, followed by 19 from senior Yancy Gates of Cincinnati and 14 from junior guard Cashmere Wright of Savannah, Ga. Gates, a 6-foot-9, 260-pound forward, also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and had three blocks for Cincinnati, which led 28-23 at halftime.

"We had them out-manned tonight but I thought they played extremely hard and made it as hard as they could on us early on before our size and athleticism took effect on the game," said Mick Cronin, in his sixth season as head coach at Cincinnati.

"One thing about playing the Canadian teams, especially one with a great coach... (is that) they really execute their offence, spread you out and put a lot of pressure on you defensively. So its very good practice for our guys. You saw that early on as we struggled with all their movement and their ball movement and the speed that they ran their offence... Once our guys adjusted, for the last 30 minutes of the game, our defence was excellent."

The Redmen, who lost high-scoring point-guard Simon Bibeau with a serious knee injury in practice two weeks ago, struggled to find another offensive threat aside from Renaud-Tremblay. Only four players got on the scoresheet, including Montreal native Karim Sy-Morissette with just four points, in addition to Nic Langley of Golden, B.C., and Gordon Duffley of Manchester, N.H., with three apiece.

Cincinnati, which finished the 2010-11 season first in the BIG EAST Conference in scoring defence, picked up where it left off last year by forcing 24 turnovers, blocking 10 shots and holding McGill to a 31.4 field-goal percentage.

The Bearcats scored 28 points off McGill’s turnovers and converted 13 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.

UC pulled away from McGill when it began the second half with a 20-4 run that started with back-to-back three-pointers from Wright and Dixon and increased the UC’s lead to 48-27. After ending the game with a 13-5 run, the Bearcats outscored McGill 47-18 in the second half.

McGill held an 18-15 margin in rebounds at halftime but UC responded by grabbing 21 boards in the second period compared to 14 for McGill to give the Bearcats a 37-29 edge for the game.

The Redmen went to the foul-line only seven times and sunk all seven shots, while UC went 15-for-25 from the charity stripe.

It marked McGill's seventh preseason game against an NCAA squad this year the Redmen ended up with a 2-5 record. McGill opens regular season play on Nov. 10 when they host the Concordia Stingers.

Cincinnati resumes preseason action on Nov. 8 when it plays host to Northern Kentucky University.

REDMEN RAP: When McGill forward Nicholas Yantzi picked up his fifth foul with 11 minutes remaining in the second half, Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin told the officials that he had no objections if McGill wanted to keep Yantzi in the contest.... Yantzi, who returned to the floor three minutes later, ended up with six fouls and one rebound in 24 minutes of court-time... McGill head coach Dave DeAveiro rejoined his team in Cincinnati after a 10-day stint at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico where he served as an assistant coach with the national team. Canada finished sixth with a 1-3 record.
