Published: 15 November 2010

MONTREAL - Gideon Balloch, a native of Beijing, and Kelsey Irwin of Vancouver, B.C., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Nov. 14, 2010.

Balloch, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering senior on the men's rugby team, accounted for all of McGill's scoring as the Redmen defeated Concordia 22-10 to capture the Quebec conference championship on Sunday. The six-foot, 185-pound winger was named player of the game after scoring three tries, converting two of them and adding a penalty goal. Balloch enrolled at McGill in 2007 after graduating from the International School of Beijing.

Irwin, a six-foot middle-blocker on the women's volleyball team, racked up 37.5 points over two matches as the Martlets upset No.1-ranked Laval 3-2 last Friday and defeated Sherbrooke 3-1 on Sunday. The 22-year-old political science and sociology senior registered 35 kills, 14 digs and four stuff blocks in nine sets. She is a product of Lord Byng secondary school in Vancouver.
