A message from the Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning)

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mathieu Laperle as McGill’s first Senior Director of Student Housing and Hospitality Services (SHHS), effective June 3, 2013.

As Senior Director, Mathieu will assume the responsibilities both of the Executive Director of Residences and Student Housing and of the Director of McGill Food and Dining Services; he will also lead a merger of the two units.  Extensive consultation with the McGill community helped identify the benefits of such a merger: strengthening the important links between the two units; promoting their common objectives; achieving operational efficiencies; and, most importantly, improving service to McGill students.

Reporting to the Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning) and serving both campuses, the Senior Director of SHHS will be responsible for all facets of student housing, and food and other hospitality services, including strategic planning, residence programming and admissions, human resources, finances, facilities, and conference services.

In 2009, Mathieu was appointed the first Director of McGill’s Food and Dining Services and, since then, has transformed virtually every aspect of its operations, introducing a new mission, core values, and organizational structure. Mathieu led his team to numerous measurable successes in the active promotion of wellness and nutrition, enhanced community relations and consultation, improved operational efficiency and employee relations, and consistent delivery of a wide variety of quality food. Arguably, the most significant strides have been in the area of sustainability, through an emphasis on the purchase of food from local providers like the Macdonald Campus farm, education initiatives, sustainable food offerings, as well as waste and energy reduction.

Mathieu holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from HEC Montreal, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MAP) and a Major in International Management (DESS) from ENAP, and a Hotel Management degree from the International School of Tourism in Montreal (ITHQ).  Before coming to McGill, he was the Food Services Manager at the University of Ottawa and previously worked in the hotel and casino industries and at Québec’s Delegation in Paris.  He is also member of the Ordre des Administrateurs Agréé du Québec and serves on the Board of Directors of McGill University’s Gault Nature Reserve.

Because of Mathieu’s leadership style, professionalism, energy, and concern for students, clients, and staff, I am confident that he will succeed in his new position and in forging a new unit that will serve McGill well.  Please join me in congratulating Mathieu and wishing him all the best in his new role.

At this time, I would also like to sincerely thank Janice Johnson for having assumed the role of Interim Director of Residences in February 2013 and for so effectively leading Residences and Student Housing (RSH) since then.  Janice will continue in her role as Interim Director of Residences, but, as of June 3rd, she will report to the Senior Director of SHHS, with responsibilities on both campuses for overseeing residence life, admissions, and off-campus housing.  Thus, I am confident that we will maintain the continuity needed in Residences to prepare for the coming year, welcome new students, and provide the excellent service, programming, and support that are hallmarks of RSH.
