Announcing the appointment of pianist Stéphane Lemelin as Chair of Music Performance

Published: 20 February 2014

Well-known to audiences across Canada as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist, Stéphane Lemelin is equally reputed as a skilled university administrator, most recently as the Director of the School of Music at the University of Ottawa. He is also a dedicated pedagogue who has been teaching at university-level for 28 years and has given masterclasses around the world. Formerly a member of Trio Hochelaga, he is the Artistic Director of the Prince Edward County Music Festival, held in Ontario.

“It is exactly this combination of talents – a deep understanding of both the academic and the professional worlds – that makes his appointment as Chair of Music Performance such a coup for Schulich.”

Sean Ferguson,

Dean of the Schulich School of Music.

Lemelin, raised in Mont-Joli, Quebec, spent his teenage years studying music in Montreal, but has since pursued his professional career largely based outside the province, having left at age 18.  Nearly 35 years later, he returns, eager to weave together the many strands of his life here in Montreal and particularly at McGill.

“McGill is Canada’s best university, and Schulich, the country’s finest music school. I look forward to engaging the faculty and students of Schulich in conversation about what it means to be a musician in the 21st century, and to thinking creatively about new ways of preparing our students for the realities of today’s professional world. McGill attracts some of the finest talents anywhere and it is our responsibility to offer those students forward-looking training opportunities that will enable them to take the music profession into yet unchartered territory.”

Lemelin begins at Schulich on May 1st, and eager audiences can hear him perform in Montreal June 11 at the Salle Bourgie, when he takes the stage in a chamber music concert with colleagues from the OSM.  A recital date at Schulich for next season is also being planned and will be announced shortly.
