The accidental market wizards

Stuart Walton wanted to be a cartoonist, but was put off the idea when he was told by the head of the art department he would be lucky to make five dollars an hour drawing cartoons. "That threw some cold water on my plans," he tells Schwager.

"I had also done some writing in college, so I thought journalism might be a good alternative."

He gave up on the idea when he was rejected by Carleton University and went on to do an MBA at McGill University, "with the intention of going into advertising". Again, the opportunity never arose. Instead, Walton took a job as a management trainee with Lloyds Bank, "because of the location: New York", where he spent most of the training programme in the foreign exchange trading room, "which was another fluke because I was supposed to be trained as a loan officer".
